Presentation is Everything

The reality of the matter is that presentation is everything, whether you’re selling a product, a service, pitching an idea, inviting someone into your home for the first time, or even deciding what to wear. At the end it it all comes down to presentation, and how well we execute the presentation to our benefit.

As we all know, presentation is about persuasion, about getting people to buy into what you are offering, whether it is superficial or profound. It’s a language, a language that is universal, able to communicate with anyone on a massive scale. But unfortunately, the power of presentation is usually overlooked, or only taken into consideration at certain moments. The key of being successful is to understand that presentation should never be taken lightly, and should always take priority in everything you do.

Those that do utilize the full potential of quality presentation methods, profit enormously from it, just look at Apple, Sony, Universal, Disney, Armani, and other successful companies. Everyone cares about presentation, even if they don’t acknowledge it. It is something that is still there at the subconscious level for all of us. For example, why do you think everyone and their mother is buying Apple products such as the iPhone, iPod, Mac laptops and computers, etc? When there are equally good and cheaper products out in the market. It’s because their products are beautifully designed, packaged, and supported by equally beautiful advertising campaigns. It’s all about their presentation, the fact that they are good products, just makes customers more satisfied with their purchases and encourages higher customer returns.

Most of us want designer clothes, beautiful homes in upscale real estate areas, or top-of-the-line exotic cars, and why? It’s all due to how we want to present ourselves to others, it’s what we all crave. We work long hours and save what little money we can to spend it on material possessions, just because it’s pretty or shiny. My point behind this post (or rant to be more accurate) is that presentations, in essence, instills a desire to consume, relate to, or crave. So always be mindful about the power of presentation and how you apply it to everything you do, because it all depends on how well you execute it.

Completely agree with you. It is all about the presentation.

  2. Hey Alex, something about your site is causing some issues. Firebug on my FF is going crazy, currently up to 5000 errors!

  3. Yeah, I noticed, but thanks for the heads up. Just uploaded a new version of the site, so I’m still working out some kinks in the code. If you see anything else, just let me know. Thanks again.

I felt a bit guilty over that. I’ve been too lax on some of my design, I guess, I need to redefine my drive on creating websites.

    Thanks for sharing this thoughts.

  5. Just a rant on the importance of presentation, nothing to take personal. Anyways, you’re a talented designer, so don’t feel guilty just because you haven’t been able to update your site. I’m actually horrible at updating, but I’m fixing that about me. I’m actually going to be posting daily and keep on top of my site from now on. Thanks for dropping in and leaving a comment. ;-)

  6. I’m not really taking any offense from what you posted (hehe). It’s sort of a self realization on my part. I am one of those walking contractions, I nitpick on certain things and yet I am often horrible on those things, as I try not to always use the “I’m only human” excuse.

  7. Presentation most often times is an emotional projection aimed at impacting the Ego of the user.

    1. Be like me.

    2. Be like them.

As a matter of self survival we want to be important be it a trend setter, or early adapter.

In this regard presentation is a matter of being human.
Where presentation fails, is when a presentation has to be explained. Like Branding. Effective Branding isn’t about the logo, rather about the emotive associations - starbucks is cool, mcdonalds isn’t.

Would be an interesting study… Brand Equity Value tied to Presentation dollars spent.
